Are dogs able to live healthily solely off of dog treats?
I have a miniature dachshund (not sure how old he is, but I'd guess anywhere between 6-8 months). My dad is the one in charge of "taking care of him" because my brother and I "don't know how to".
Anyway, my dad insists that feeding him a diet of Beggin' Strips and Pup-peroni is sufficient enough for a daily diet. My question is, is it? Or does he need actual dog food to live a healthy life? What brands would you recommend for a dachshund, especially for ones that are so stubborn and picky about their food?
I can't even tell if you're joking or not. I hope you are.
Ok ::sigh:: at the risk of getting laughed off the board, I'm going to answer your question:
Your Dad is sick. He shouldn't be allowed to own any animal. I wouldn't give my dogs beggin strips or pupperonis for a TREAT! This may even qualify as animal cruelty, to be honest. I don't know, because I've never heard of an adult doing anything like this with a dog before, and I've been working with animals all of my life!
PLEASE please please have your Dad get a book on dogs. Or just do a google search for dogs online, for starters.
I recommend you get the puppy on a grain-free, or at least corn-free premium dog food. At the very least, feed him Nutro Ultra, which is available at even those big chain retailers like Petco. It's not the best food, but it's worlds better than what he is doing. Also, it will be cheaper per pound than those disgusting dog "treats".
The poor dog will be falling apart, morbidly obese, with rotten teeth before long! Your Dad needs a crash-course in puppy ownership. Actually he could use one in parenting, if that's the sort of example of responsibility he sets for two little kids
